Fondazione De Rigo H.E.ART Onlus supports the inclusive playground “L’Isola che non c’è”

The Project

Fondazione De Rigo H.E.ART Onlus, long committed to supporting young people in accessing their fundamental rights to health and education, has proudly announced its commitment to the creation of the largest themed inclusive playground in Europe. The park will be located within the Parco Città di Bologna in the municipality of Belluno and will cover an area of 660 square meters, with the capacity to host more than 130 children at the same time. Promoted by the Belluno Firefighters Recreational Association, the project is scheduled to be inaugurated in October 2024.

Project concept

The Peter Pan–themed playground in Belluno is an ambitious initiative designed to create an inclusive and immersive play environment inspired by J.M. Barrie’s famous story. The concept focuses on recreating the atmosphere and iconic settings of Neverland, offering children the opportunity to explore and play across different themed areas:

  • The Jolly Roger, a replica of the famous pirate ship, where children can imagine sailing the seas or facing Captain Hook
  • The Mermaid Lagoon, a magical space inspired by the meeting place of the story’s mermaids
  • Skull Rock, a scenic feature reflecting the mysterious and adventurous island of Neverland
  • The Indian Camp, a space inspired by Peter Pan’s allies, offering further opportunities for play and discovery
  • The Hangman’s Tree, designed as a fantastical hideaway where children’s imagination can come to life

Park features

The Peter Pan–themed playground has been designed to be accessible to all children, including those with physical, cognitive, and sensory disabilities, allowing everyone to play and interact together. This inclusive approach is reflected in both the choice of equipment and the design of the spaces:

  • Inclusivity: the playground is accessible to all children, enabling barrier-free play
  • Safety: safety is a priority, with anti-trauma rubber flooring ensuring a secure and functional environment
  • Education and imagination: the park encourages learning through play, stimulating creativity and development
  • Urban regeneration: the project contributes to the revitalization of a public park area, creating a valuable space for the community and visitors

We envision a place where every child, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, can fully experience childhood through play,” said Barbara De Rigo, President of Fondazione De Rigo H.E.ART Onlus. “An inclusive playground is not just a space for recreation, but a symbol of community and its values. Supporting its development means investing in a more equitable and inclusive future for every child, and making a tangible commitment to improving the lives of young people and their families.”

The support for the Peter Pan–themed inclusive playground represents just one of the many initiatives promoted by Fondazione De Rigo H.E.ART Onlus to foster the growth and development of young people, in line with its long-standing values of solidarity and social commitment. An initiative that has the potential to improve the quality of life of young people in Belluno and serve as a model for inclusion and collective well-being in other communities.
